Residents of Nyankpala in the Tolon District have formally petitioned state authorities, including President John Mahama and the Ministry of the Interior, to accelerate the investigation into violent clashes that occurred on December 7, 2024. The election-day violence resulted in the death of Shaibu Haruna, also known as Alhaji, and left several other community members with significant injuries. Although the Ghana Police Service has previously indicated that investigations are ongoing, the community remains deeply concerned by the lack of visible progress nearly a year after the tragic incident.
Speaking on behalf of the Concerned NDC Youth, spokesperson Alhassan Alhassan expressed fears that the slow pace of the inquiry could lead to the loss of critical evidence and the degradation of witness testimony. The group's petition outlines seven specific demands aimed at revitalizing the case, including a comprehensive review of suspect descriptions and the provision of better logistical support for investigators on the ground. The petitioners are calling for a professional and impartial process that prioritizes justice for the victims over political considerations, stressing that the current delays are causing unnecessary distress to the affected families.
By addressing the petition to the Presidency and high-ranking security officials, the Nyankpala youth aim to ensure that the case does not fade from public attention. They are seeking regular, transparent updates to keep the community informed of any breakthroughs or challenges in the investigation. The group maintains that a credible and fair resolution is essential not only for the peace of Nyankpala but also to uphold the rule of law and prevent future occurrences of such violence in the Tolon District.
