The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) have reached significant milestones in both domestic infrastructure development and international security, underscoring their vital role in national progress. On Monday, September 14, the GAF is scheduled to formally hand over a 175.6-kilometre cleared right-of-way for the highly anticipated Accra-Kumasi Expressway to the government. President John Mahama will receive the cleared site at a ceremony in Kwaso, near Ejisu, marking a critical step in a project described as the largest capital investment in the history of the country.
The clearing of the right-of-way by military personnel represents a major logistical breakthrough for the expressway, which aims to drastically improve connectivity between Ghana's two largest cities. Minister of State Felix Kwakye Ofosu emphasized that this initiative is a cornerstone of the administration’s development agenda, designed to facilitate trade, enhance road safety, and reduce travel times. The involvement of the GAF in such a massive civil engineering project highlights the military's expanding capacity to support civilian infrastructure goals under the leadership of President Mahama.
Parallel to these domestic efforts, the Ghana Army has also demonstrated its operational excellence on the global stage with the successful completion of the UNIFIL GHANBATT 92 mission in Lebanon. After a year-long deployment in southern Lebanon, where they maintained peace amid escalating tensions between Hezbollah and the Israeli Defence Forces, the contingent has returned home. The Chief of Army Staff, Major General Lawrence Kwaku Gbetanu, officially declared the mission accomplished during a ceremony at the 5 Infantry Battalion Parade Square, praising the troops for their discipline and bravery in a volatile region.
These concurrent achievements—securing vital transit corridors at home and maintaining international stability abroad—reflect the multifaceted nature of Ghana's modern military. As the government prepares to commence the next phase of the Accra-Kumasi Expressway construction following Monday’s handover, the return of experienced peacekeepers ensures a robust and battle-tested force ready for future challenges.
