The Ghana Medical Trust Fund, popularly known as Mahama Cares, is extending its nationwide sensitisation tour to the Northern and Upper East regions. This initiative is designed to increase public awareness regarding the early detection of chronic diseases and the financial assistance available for specialized medical treatments. This expansion follows a series of successful outreach events in the Western, Central, Greater Accra, and Volta regions, which focused on improving access to high-quality healthcare for all Ghanaians regardless of their location.
During the upcoming engagements, the Fund will focus on educating residents, traditional leaders, health professionals, and civil society groups about its various interventions. A major priority is the early diagnosis and treatment of chronic illnesses, such as cancer, which often place an overwhelming financial burden on families. The campaign operates under the guiding principle that "no family should be crushed by the cost of chronic illness," highlighting the Fund's role in alleviating the high costs associated with specialized care.
Adjoa Obuobia Darko-Opoku, the Administrator of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, emphasised that the tour is vital for identifying and addressing gaps in healthcare delivery, including equipment shortages and significant financial barriers. She stressed the importance of multi-sectoral collaboration to ensure that essential medical services are reachable for every patient. By engaging directly with regional authorities and local communities, the Fund aims to streamline the process for citizens to access the support they need for life-saving treatments.
As the tour moves into the northern parts of the country, it underscores the government's commitment under President John Mahama to democratise healthcare. The sensitisation program is expected to build on the momentum of previous activities, ensuring that the GMTF's objectives are well understood and that the system for patient support is both transparent and accessible. This regional outreach is a key component of a broader strategy to strengthen Ghana's health infrastructure and protect citizens from the devastating economic impact of catastrophic health expenditures.
