The Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Dr. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, has conducted a comprehensive monitoring exercise of the Ghana School Feeding Programme (GSFP) across several schools in the Greater Accra Region. This initiative, aimed at evaluating the implementation and effectiveness of the social intervention, underscores the government's commitment to enhancing educational outcomes and pupil health through the delivery of consistent, nutritious meals. The monitoring team sought to assess whether current meal standards align with government expectations and to address any operational challenges faced by caterers.
Accompanied by the National Coordinator of the programme, Hajia Fati Forgor, and the Mayor of Accra, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, Dr. Lartey visited institutions including the Chorkor Presbyterian Basic School and Chemunaa Basic School. During these inspections, the team directly assessed food quality and interacted with pupils, teachers, and caterers to gather firsthand feedback. The Minister expressed satisfaction with the meals being served during the visit, noting that both school authorities and stakeholders provided positive reports regarding the taste and nutritional value of the food provided to the children.
Despite the positive feedback, Dr. Lartey issued a stern reminder to service providers about the necessity of maintaining high standards at all times. She emphasized that the Ministry would intensify its oversight and warned that any caterers found to be non-compliant with established guidelines would face sanctions. The Minister highlighted that the programme is a critical tool for boosting school enrollment and improving the overall health of children, making accountability and efficiency non-negotiable for all contractors involved in the scheme.
Moving forward, the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection intends to use the findings from this recent tour to further refine the programme’s operations and ensure its long-term sustainability. Dr. Lartey urged pupils to remain regular in their school attendance and strive for academic excellence, reaffirming that the administration of President John Mahama remains dedicated to providing the necessary support to secure the future of Ghanaian children. This intensified monitoring marks a proactive phase of heightened oversight designed to safeguard the integrity of the school feeding initiative nationwide.
