As Ghana grapples with recent hikes in electricity tariffs, households and businesses are being urged to pivot toward energy-efficient refrigeration and air conditioning practices to mitigate rising costs. Kofi Agyarko, the Chief Executive of the Center for Shared Responsibility and Technology Ambition, has emphasized that while the public has little control over utility pricing, they maintain significant power over their consumption patterns. Speaking in light of the current economic pressures, Agyarko highlighted the urgent need for a shift in consumer behavior to ensure financial sustainability for both private citizens and commercial entities.
To achieve significant savings, Agyarko recommends that consumers prioritize the purchase of energy-efficient appliances and optimize the settings of their current devices. For instance, correctly adjusting the temperature of refrigerators and air conditioners can lead to substantial reductions in energy bills. This message aligns with the 2023 World Refrigeration Day theme, "Cool Intelligence," which promotes the responsible use of cooling technologies. By adopting smarter cooling habits, Ghanaians can effectively manage their household budgets even as the national energy landscape becomes more expensive.
Beyond individual consumption, the refrigeration and cooling sector faces systemic hurdles that impede efficiency. Agyarko pointed to a critical shortage of skilled technicians and the proliferation of counterfeit spare parts as major obstacles. These issues, combined with the use of outdated or inefficient equipment, not only drive up energy costs but also threaten food security and public health. Refrigeration is a backbone of the economy, essential for preserving perishable goods and maintaining health standards, making the professionalization of the sector a priority for national development.
Addressing these challenges requires a multi-faceted approach involving better enforcement of standards, intensive public education, and strategic investment in technician training. Agyarko advocated for stronger regulatory oversight to weed out substandard parts and ensure that only certified professionals handle cooling systems. By fostering a culture of efficiency and technical excellence, Ghana can move toward a more sustainable future where cooling technologies support economic growth without imposing an unbearable financial burden on its citizens.
