KNUST and EPA Pilot National Air Quality Data Hub to Centralize Ghana's Environmental Monitoring

Researchers at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) have partnered with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to begin testing a groundbreaking National Air Quality Data Hub. Developed by KNUST’s CDAI Lab with backing from the Clean Air Fund, this initiative is designed to address the long-standing challenge of fragmented air quality information across the country. By consolidating diverse data streams onto a single, integrated platform, the project aims to provide a unified view of Ghana’s atmospheric conditions, marking a significant milestone in the nation's environmental monitoring capabilities.

The platform is engineered to facilitate real-time data sharing and includes advanced security features to protect the integrity of the information collected. Currently, air quality data in Ghana is often siloed within different organizations, making it difficult for regulators to form a comprehensive picture of pollution levels. The new hub seeks to eliminate these inefficiencies, offering a centralized repository that will eventually be housed in a physical command center at the EPA. This infrastructure will empower the agency to make more precise regulatory decisions while simultaneously improving public access to information about local air quality.

This technological advancement arrives at a critical time, aligning with the implementation of the Air Quality Management Regulation, 2025. The collaboration highlights a strengthening tie between academic research and state regulatory bodies, emphasizing the need for data-driven solutions to urban health challenges. As the testing phase progresses toward a full nationwide rollout, the hub is expected to become a cornerstone of Ghana’s environmental policy, helping the government and citizens alike to better understand and mitigate the impacts of air pollution in accordance with international standards.
