The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has secured a significant international milestone by winning the inaugural $3 million Africa Higher Education for Transformation (AHEFT) Prize. This achievement coincided with the official investiture of Professor Christian Agyare as the university’s 13th Vice-Chancellor, a ceremony where the government reaffirmed its commitment to deepening its partnership with the institution. Representing President John Mahama, Chief of Staff Julius Debrah emphasized that education remains the cornerstone of the administration's strategy for national development and economic transformation. The AHEFT Prize, awarded by the Mastercard Foundation on July 20, 2026, recognizes KNUST as one of five leading institutions on the continent dedicated to research and innovation. This prize is part of a broader $500 million commitment by the Mastercard Foundation over the next decade aimed at revitalizing higher education across Africa. The funding is expected to bolster KNUST's capacity to produce groundbreaking research that addresses localized challenges while competing on a global scale. During the investiture ceremony, Chief of Staff Julius Debrah highlighted the government’s intent to translate academic research into practical solutions that create jobs and improve the livelihoods of Ghanaians. He paid tribute to the Chancellor, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, and the immediate past Vice-Chancellor, Professor Rita Akosua Dickson, for their contributions to the university’s prestige. The government expressed high confidence in Professor Agyare’s leadership, urging the new administration to focus on producing graduates who embody both academic excellence and high integrity. As KNUST enters this new era under Professor Agyare, the focus shifts toward fostering an entrepreneurial spirit among students to drive Ghana’s economic progress. The synergy between the university’s internal leadership changes and its newfound international financial support positions the institution as a pivotal hub for innovation. Moving forward, the collaboration between the Mahama administration and KNUST is expected to prioritize science and technology as the primary engines for national industrialization and sustainable growth.
