The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), in a strategic partnership with Zoomlion Ghana Limited, has launched an intensive sanitation and flood-prevention campaign across the Garden City. This initiative aims to safeguard lives and property during the rainy season by addressing the root causes of urban flooding. The move was heavily influenced by recent devastating floods in Greater Accra, which resulted in significant casualties and property damage, prompting officials in the Ashanti Region to take proactive measures to avert a similar disaster in Ghana's second-largest city.
Central to this campaign is a city-wide effort to clear choked drains, desilt gutters, and manage waste accumulation in identified flood-prone areas. Zoomlion Ghana Limited has committed to providing additional specialized equipment and personnel to support community-led clean-up activities and mobilization efforts. Mrs. Doris Kweikwor Adjei, Managing Director of Zoomlion, emphasized that maintaining a clean environment is a collective responsibility, urging residents to actively support the initiative to ensure the city’s drainage systems function effectively throughout the season.
To ensure the long-term sustainability of these efforts, the Mayor of Kumasi announced the introduction of a stricter sanitation summons initiative, which is scheduled to commence on July 6, 2026. Under this program, households and businesses that fail to comply with environmental and waste management regulations will face legal action and formal enforcement measures. This strategy is complemented by an existing reward system, as highlighted by the Ashanti Regional Minister, which incentivizes citizens to report illegal waste dumping to the authorities.
These measures signify a transition from voluntary community participation toward a more rigorous, policy-driven approach to urban sanitation and public health. By combining active waste management with legal enforcement and community incentives, the KMA and its partners aim to foster a culture of environmental accountability. The ultimate goal is to create a cleaner, safer Kumasi that is resilient to the challenges of climate change and seasonal flooding.
