Mrs. Comfort Ofori-Appiah, the Abuakwa South Municipal Director of Education, has lauded the Kingsley Science and Maths Quiz and the Kingsley Spelling Challenge as transformative tools for enhancing educational standards within the municipality. Speaking at the grand finale of this year’s competitions in Kyebi, Mrs. Ofori-Appiah highlighted how these academic contests have significantly boosted students' reading proficiency, confidence, and overall academic performance since their inception six years ago. The director emphasized that the initiatives have become a cornerstone for fostering a culture of excellence among learners in the area, creating a lasting positive impact on the local educational landscape.
The competitions are designed to build a strong foundation in literacy and numeracy at the primary level, which Mrs. Ofori-Appiah noted is essential for easing the transition to the junior high school level. By encouraging healthy competition and rigorous study, the Kingsley challenges have successfully motivated pupils to engage more deeply with their subjects and improved their enthusiasm for academic contests. The long-term impact of these efforts is already evident, with many previous participants securing admissions into some of Ghana’s most prestigious senior high schools. This year’s event also introduced a strategic change in format, where semi-finalist schools were invited to attend the finale to inspire a broader range of students toward academic success.
Addressing broader academic outcomes, the Municipal Director touched upon the performance in the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE). While acknowledging a slight decline in results during the previous year—a trend attributed to the transition to the new Common Core Curriculum—Mrs. Ofori-Appiah expressed strong optimism for the current cycle. The municipality has set a targeted pass rate of 65% for this year’s candidates. She concluded by urging students awaiting their results to remain focused and encouraged them to make informed, strategic choices during the school selection process to ensure they continue their path toward higher education.
