A fatal accident at the Kamirekrom Immigration Checkpoint on the Goaso–Kukuom highway has claimed the life of one person after a truck carrying plywood overturned. The incident, which took place on July 9, sent shockwaves through the local community as emergency responders rushed to the scene to assist. According to the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), the tragedy was triggered by a mechanical failure that left the driver unable to control the heavy vehicle as it approached the security post.\n\nDetailed reports from the GNFS indicate that the truck was heavily loaded with plywood when its braking system failed. As the vehicle reached the checkpoint, the driver’s attempts to bring the truck to a halt proved futile, leading to the vehicle flipping over onto its side. The sheer weight of the plywood cargo complicated the situation, as it spilled across the roadway and pinned a victim underneath the wreckage. Firefighters from the Goaso Municipal Fire Station were called in to lead the extrication process, navigating the hazardous debris to reach those involved.\n\nDuring the rescue operation, the firefighting team successfully extricated one individual, identified only as Frank, who had been trapped beneath the heavy timber. Regrettably, despite the rapid response and the technical efforts of the Goaso municipal team, Frank was confirmed dead at the scene. The body was subsequently handled according to standard protocols, marking a somber end to the emergency operation at the checkpoint. No other immediate fatalities were reported, though the impact of the crash caused significant disruption to traffic flow along the busy highway.\n\nThis incident highlights the critical importance of regular vehicle maintenance, particularly for long-haul trucks carrying heavy industrial materials like plywood. Brake failure remains a leading cause of road accidents in Ghana, often resulting in preventable loss of life and property damage. As authorities continue to monitor the Goaso–Kukuom stretch, this event serves as a stark reminder for transport operators to adhere to safety regulations and ensure that all mechanical components are in optimal condition before embarking on transit to prevent such recurring tragedies on national roads.
