The African Union Peace Panel has launched a high-level diplomatic intervention to find a political resolution to the conflict in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). On October 5, a delegation of African mediators engaged in critical discussions with Rwandan President Paul Kagame and leadership from the AFC/M23 rebel movement. The meetings represent a significant push by the African Union (AU) to address a regional crisis that has displaced millions and strained diplomatic relations across the Great Lakes region.
The AU delegation, often referred to as the panel of "elders," included several former heads of state: former Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta, former Ethiopian President Sahle-Work Zewde, and former Botswana President Mokgweetsi Masisi. These officials held direct talks with the AFC/M23 political coordinator, Corneille Nangaa, and other senior rebel leaders in Goma. The mission aims to facilitate a transition from military confrontation to a structured political dialogue involving all primary stakeholders in the conflict.
This diplomatic outreach occurs amid persistent tensions between the DRC and Rwanda. The DRC government has frequently accused Rwanda of providing support to the M23 insurgents, a charge that the Rwandan government continues to deny. By engaging directly with both President Kagame and the AFC/M23 leadership, the AU panel is attempting to navigate these complex regional dynamics to secure a sustainable peace agreement. The involvement of Kenyatta, who has led previous mediation efforts, underscores the continuity and urgency of the current peace process.
While specific details regarding the outcome of these discussions have not been made public, the intensified engagement is seen as a vital step toward de-escalating the situation in North Kivu. The AU mediators are expected to continue their consultations with various stakeholders to build on existing peace frameworks, such as the Luanda and Nairobi processes. The success of this latest intervention will depend on the commitment of the parties involved to implement a lasting ceasefire and address the underlying grievances fueling the instability.
