Retired Supreme Court Justice William Anaan Atuguba has provided a rare glimpse into his personal life and family history, reflecting on the practice of polygamy and his unfulfilled aspirations within the Catholic Church. In a candid interview, the esteemed legal mind shared insights into his upbringing and the cultural shifts that have shaped his perspective on modern marriage. Justice Atuguba’s reflections offer a unique bridge between Ghana’s traditional past and its contemporary legal and social landscape, providing context to the lifestyle choices of previous generations.
Recounting his family background, Justice Atuguba revealed that his father lived a polygamous lifestyle, a practice he noted was common during that era primarily to meet the labor demands of an agricultural economy. He admitted that he had a "short brush" with the idea of pursuing a similar path himself but ultimately decided against it. Drawing from his own experiences and observations, he strongly advised against polygamy in the modern era, citing the inherent challenges and complexities such arrangements bring to family dynamics. He emphasized that education has been a pivotal factor in shifting societal values away from large, polygamous households toward more nuclear structures.
The retired justice also delved into his early life ambitions, revealing a surprising desire to enter the priesthood. He shared that he had nurtured a dream of becoming a Catholic priest, a path that would have seen him dedicate his life to the church rather than the bench. However, this ambition remained unfulfilled as his father did not support the vocational choice, eventually leading Atuguba toward his distinguished career in law. Despite his family's traditional background, Justice Atuguba went on to have seven children and has maintained a firm stance on the importance of focused family life in the present day.
Ultimately, Justice Atuguba’s commentary serves as a reflection on the evolution of Ghanaian society. By contrasting the agricultural necessities of his father's time with the educational and economic realities of today, he highlights the transition from traditional communal labor structures to modern familial goals. His personal narrative underscores how family expectations and personal aspirations often intersect, shaping the lives of even the most prominent public figures in the country.
