Chief of Staff Dr. Julius Debrah has called for a strategic shift in the One Million Coders Programme, asserting that the initiative's success must be measured by tangible job creation and entrepreneurship rather than the number of certificates awarded. Speaking at the MOBEX Africa 2026 forum, Dr. Debrah emphasized that digital skills training must lead directly to employment opportunities for the youth to truly advance Ghana’s digital economy.
Dr. Debrah highlighted the necessity of balancing technical instruction with infrastructure development to ensure the digital economy thrives. He noted that while the programme aims to equip a vast number of young Ghanaians with coding skills, the ultimate metric for digital transformation should be the establishment of real pathways into the workforce. To support the programme's expansion, he announced that the government is providing additional laptops to equip new learning centers, ensuring that trainees have the necessary tools to apply their skills in a practical environment.
The Chief of Staff also commended the Minister for Communications for the programme's successful rollout and growth. He urged stakeholders to move beyond basic training metrics and instead foster a collaborative ecosystem where the private sector helps define the skills required for modern industry. By aligning the curriculum with market demands, Dr. Debrah argued that the initiative would not only produce skilled coders but also drive technology-led solutions across various sectors of the national economy.
In his closing remarks, Dr. Debrah reiterated that the digital economy requires a holistic approach that prioritizes people-centered investment. He called for a stronger partnership between government and businesses to ensure that the youth are not just technically proficient but are also positioned to lead Ghana’s industrial and technological evolution through sustainable entrepreneurship.
