Residents in the Juaboso District of the Western North Region are raising urgent alarms over a heavy truck that has been abandoned on the Benchemaa Barrier-Oseikojokrom highway for over a year. The stationary vehicle, located near the Benchemaa Barrier, is described as a significant safety hazard for commuters and local residents in Nkatieso and Benchemaa. Despite the extended period the vehicle has remained on the active roadway, no action has been taken to remove it, leading to heightening fears of a fatal collision.
Community members, including tricycle operators who frequently use the route, have highlighted the specific dangers posed by the truck's location. Mr. Kwame Nkuah, a local resident, emphasized that the truck’s position creates a hazardous bottleneck on the highway, particularly during night hours when visibility is low. Residents argue that the continued presence of the vehicle is an accident waiting to happen and have called on the police and district authorities to prioritize its immediate removal to protect lives.
Addressing the situation, the Assembly Member for the area, Mr. Samuel Agyekum, confirmed that the issue has been a recurring topic of discussion during assembly meetings. He stated that formal reports have been lodged with the local police to help facilitate the removal process. However, efforts to clear the road have been hampered by two major factors: the inability to locate the truck's owner and the complete lack of heavy-duty towing services within the district capable of moving such a large vehicle.
As the truck enters its second year on the Benchemaa-Oseikojokrom highway, the community remains in a state of anxiety. The situation underscores a broader infrastructure challenge in the region regarding the availability of emergency road services and the enforcement of road safety regulations. Residents are now appealing to the Western North Regional Coordinating Council and the National Road Safety Authority to intervene before the abandoned vehicle causes a tragedy on this vital transit route.
