Janine Lochrenberg, a 65-year-old South African woman, was killed in a shark attack on Tuesday morning while swimming off the coast of KuGompo City. The incident occurred during her routine open water swim, an activity she performed regularly as part of her deep affinity for the ocean. Witnesses and responders reported that the attack took place near Orient Beach, a popular coastal destination on the country's eastern shore.
Despite the tragic outcome, Lochrenberg had taken specific safety precautions by wearing a magnetic shark-repellent band. These devices are intended to deter sharks by disrupting their electromagnetic senses, yet the protection proved insufficient in this instance. The shark bit Lochrenberg on her thigh and upper arm, inflicting catastrophic injuries. She reportedly succumbed to her wounds and died before reaching the shore.
Family members, including her sister and partner, have described Lochrenberg as a remarkably brave person who was most at home in the water. Following the fatal encounter, local authorities immediately closed Orient Beach and a neighboring beach as a safety precaution. Officials are expected to monitor the coastline for further shark activity before reopening the area to the public.
