The Kuntanase District Court in the Ashanti Region has remanded 17-year-old Isaac Opoku into custody for allegedly inflicting multiple cutlass wounds on his mother and sister. The teenager, who has been charged with causing unlawful harm, is accused of carrying out the violent assault in a fit of rage on June 21, 2026. During the court appearance on June 27, it was established that the suspect would remain in custody until his next hearing, scheduled for July 8, 2026, while police conclude their investigations.
The incident reportedly stemmed from a domestic dispute involving the suspect's use of narcotics. According to investigators, Opoku, described as a reported drug addict, became enraged upon discovering that a parcel of cannabis he had kept in his room was missing. He allegedly confronted his mother, Grace Yeboah, and his sister, Margaret Oduro, demanding they return the illegal substance. When the victims denied any knowledge of the missing parcel, the suspect reportedly armed himself with a cutlass and attacked them, inflicting serious injuries.
Neighbors who heard the victims' cries for help rushed to the scene and intervened, preventing further harm. Both Grace Yeboah and Margaret Oduro were immediately transported to St. Michael’s Hospital for emergency treatment. Hospital reports indicate that while both suffered severe wounds, one of the victims had to be referred to a larger medical facility as her condition deteriorated. Opoku was also treated for minor injuries sustained during the incident before being handed over to the police.
In the aftermath of the arrest, the accused admitted to the crime and guided police officers to the location where he had hidden the weapon used in the attack. The case has highlighted growing concerns regarding substance abuse and domestic violence in the Ashanti Region. As the victims continue their recovery, the court is expected to provide further directions during the upcoming July hearing to determine the next phase of the legal process.
