India is making significant strides in the global energy transition, with non-fossil fuel sources now accounting for 51.93% of its total installed power capacity as of December 2025. This milestone underscores the nation's rapid shift toward a low-carbon economy and sets the stage for its next major technological frontier: the National Green Hydrogen Mission. By positioning green hydrogen at the center of its energy strategy, India seeks to decarbonize heavy industries while establishing itself as a central hub for clean energy innovation and export on the world stage.
The cornerstone of this strategy is the ambitious target to produce 5 million metric tonnes of green hydrogen annually by the year 2030. This initiative is specifically designed to address the carbon footprint of "hard-to-abate" sectors, most notably petroleum refining and steel manufacturing, which have traditionally relied on carbon-intensive processes. Through the National Green Hydrogen Mission, the Indian government is actively fostering international partnerships and cross-border technological cooperation to streamline hydrogen trade and lower production costs. These strategic alliances are expected to catalyze significant private sector investments and accelerate the development of necessary infrastructure across the energy value chain.
Beyond its immediate domestic energy benefits, India’s leadership in the green hydrogen space offers a vital roadmap for other nations, particularly within the Global South, as they grapple with the dual challenges of rapid economic growth and urgent climate action. As international cooperation for technology transfer and clean energy financing intensifies, India’s focus on creating scalable and affordable hydrogen solutions could serve as a global benchmark for sustainable development. The successful implementation of this mission not only promises to bolster India’s own energy security but also solidifies its role as a pivotal architect in the global transition toward a sustainable, low-carbon future.
