Health professionals at the International Maritime Hospital (IMaH) have issued a stark warning regarding the impact of poor mental health on safety and productivity within Ghana's maritime sector. Speaking at a media forum on men's mental health organized by the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA), officials highlighted that emotional and psychological distress can lead to catastrophic errors in high-concentration tasks. Mr. Adams Umar Mengo, the Head of Administration at IMaH, emphasized that the maritime industry is particularly vulnerable due to its safety-critical nature, where a single lapse in judgment—especially in operations like crane handling—can result in significant accidents or financial losses.
The medical experts further cautioned against the growing trend of men using alcohol and drugs to cope with workplace stress and personal pressures. Dr. Edward Amoah Boateng and Dr. Kissi Dompreh-Ofori noted that while these substances may offer temporary distractions, they fail to address underlying issues and ultimately exacerbate mental health conditions. Dr. Boateng advocated for healthier alternatives, pointing out that regular physical exercise releases endorphins and lowers cortisol levels, which are essential for effective stress management and improved sleep. The forum also served as a call to action for families to remain vigilant for behavioral changes in their loved ones, as substance abuse is often concealed until it reaches a critical stage.
To mitigate these risks, the IMaH team is urging maritime employers and the broader community to prioritize mental health education and the establishment of robust wellness programs. By providing access to counseling and early intervention services, organizations can foster a safer work environment and reduce the pervasive stigma that often prevents men from seeking help. The experts concluded that proactive support systems are not merely a welfare issue but a business necessity, as the long hours and hazardous environments inherent in the maritime industry demand a workforce that is both physically and psychologically fit for duty.
