The IDP Foundation (IDPF) and Opportunity International have announced a strategic partnership to expand the Rising Schools Program into Northern Ghana, a move aimed at bolstering the quality of education in underserved communities. This initiative specifically addresses the chronic financial barriers faced by non-state schools in the region, particularly the high interest rates and lack of capital that often stifle institutional growth and infrastructure development. By targeting these low-fee private schools, the partnership seeks to ensure that children in the northern regions have access to more stable and better-resourced learning environments.
Central to this expansion is the creation of a revolving fund designed to provide affordable school improvement loans tailored to the unique needs of local educators. Beyond mere financial aid, the program integrates practical capacity-building support through management training for school proprietors. This dual approach ensures that schools do not just receive capital but also the operational expertise required to manage resources and improve educational outcomes effectively. The initiative initially targets 30 schools, focusing on transforming them into sustainable, investment-ready institutions that can serve as models for others in the region.
The partnership represents a significant shift in how education is financed in Northern Ghana, moving toward a model that combines impact investment with educational development. By proving the viability of lending to low-cost private schools, IDPF and Opportunity International aim to influence the broader financial sector to view non-state education as a bankable and impactful industry. As the program matures, it is expected to create a scalable pipeline of schools capable of delivering high-quality education, ultimately contributing to the national effort to reduce educational inequality and improve literacy across Ghana.
