A suspected armed robber, identified as Ibrahim Mugo (popularly known as 'Mugu'), died on the night of June 13 following a violent taxi hijacking incident in the La neighborhood of Accra. The incident, which centered around the seizure of a Daewoo Matiz taxi, ended abruptly when the suspect crashed the stolen vehicle just a short distance from where he had originally confronted the driver. Police have launched an investigation into the circumstances of the death, as Mugo was found with a fatal gunshot wound following the crash.
The confrontation began when the suspect allegedly attacked the taxi driver, identified as Mr. Ago Sowah. Reports indicate that Mugo fired a gunshot to intimidate the driver and gain control of the vehicle. While Mr. Sowah managed to escape the situation physically unharmed, eyewitnesses described a scene of panic as the sound of gunfire echoed through the area. Residents and passers-by reportedly avoided intervening during the initial hijacking due to the suspect being armed, allowing him to flee the scene in the hijacked Matiz.
Mugo's escape was short-lived. Shortly after speeding away, the suspect lost control of the vehicle and crashed near La Girls’ School. Upon reaching the wreckage, responders found the suspect deceased with a gunshot wound. While some initial accounts left the source of the wound unclear, additional reports suggested it may have been self-inflicted during the sequence of events. The Ghana Police Service has since recovered the vehicle and moved the suspect's body for autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
This violent episode has significantly heightened safety concerns among residents in La and surrounding Accra suburbs. Local community members have expressed alarm over the perceived increase in armed robberies and the presence of firearms in the area. With Mugo identified by some sources as an alleged ex-convict, the incident has also sparked discussions regarding recidivism and security. Police investigations continue as authorities work to piece together the final moments leading up to the suspect's death.
