Ghana’s roads recorded a tragic series of incidents on June 13, 2023, resulting in the loss of at least three lives and multiple injuries across the Volta and Central Regions. In the regional capital of Ho, a devastating collision at the Civic Centre traffic lights claimed the lives of two women, while a separate multi-vehicle accident on the Cape Coast–Takoradi Highway led to the death of a motorcyclist. These incidents have once again sparked concerns regarding road safety and the mechanical integrity of heavy-duty vehicles operating within busy urban corridors.
The accident in Ho occurred at approximately 2:30 p.m. at the Bankoe Civic Centre, a location noted for previous traffic fatalities. A Hyundai Mighty truck, driven by Mr. Yaw Botwe, reportedly veered into the opposite lane and collided with a Bajaj rickshaw before crashing into a nearby shop. The impact resulted in the deaths of 43-year-old Vivian Prempeh and 26-year-old Osei Portia, both of whom were pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital. While some reports suggested the driver fled, police investigations confirmed that Mr. Botwe was hospitalized and remains under observation. Other victims, including 44-year-old Abubakar Larabu, remain in critical condition as medical teams work to stabilize the injured.
Later that afternoon, emergency services responded to another fatal crash along the Cape Coast–Takoradi Highway involving three vehicles. At approximately 4:48 p.m., a motorcyclist riding a Boxer motorcycle collided with a Toyota Corolla. The force of the initial impact threw the rider into the direct path of an oncoming Daewoo Metro Mass Transit bus. Personnel from the University of Cape Coast (UCC) Fire Station arrived at the scene to manage the heavy traffic and clear debris, but the motorcyclist was unfortunately confirmed dead at the scene. Preliminary reports indicate the sequence of events was a tragic chain reaction that left little room for the rider to escape.
Authorities in both regions have launched formal investigations to determine the exact causes of these accidents, with mechanical failure and speeding being explored as primary factors in the Ho incident. The Civic Centre area in Ho has been highlighted by residents as a high-risk zone, following a past tragedy in the same vicinity that claimed ten lives. As police work to reconstruct the events of June 13, road safety advocates are calling for stricter enforcement of vehicle maintenance standards and increased vigilance by drivers to prevent further loss of life on the nation's highways.
