Ghana and Malta have officially launched the Malta-Ghana Ethics Education Partnership, an initiative dubbed "Project Ethics" designed to bolster the moral and character development of Ghanaian youth. Funded by the Maltese Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs, the project aims to integrate values-based learning into the national curriculum to better prepare students for the complexities of the modern world. Education Minister Mr. Haruna Iddrisu joined High Commissioner Mr. Ronald Micallef to inaugurate the partnership, which seeks to instill ethical standards and civic responsibility from the earliest stages of formal education.
The initiative focuses on three primary pillars: teacher training, values-based learning resources, and policy support. By targeting students from kindergarten through junior high school, "Project Ethics" intends to cultivate critical thinking and a deep sense of moral duty. Minister Iddrisu emphasized that the integration of ethics into the curriculum is a strategic move to foster a sound moral community, aligning with the government's broader educational reforms and its vision for holistic student development. The project is designed to be culturally relevant, ensuring that global ethical standards are adapted to fit Ghana’s unique educational and social landscape.
High Commissioner Ronald Micallef underscored the necessity of ethics education in an increasingly technology-driven global environment. He noted that as digital advancements reshape society, the importance of a strong moral compass becomes paramount for young people navigating these changes. This partnership builds on international best practices and follows the successful implementation of a similar ethics education project in Ethiopia, which was conducted in collaboration with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC). The success of that prior initiative provides a robust framework for the new Ghanaian program.
Looking forward, the partnership is expected to strengthen the bilateral bond between Ghana and Malta while creating a sustainable model for character development in the school system. By empowering teachers with specialized training and the tools to deliver ethics-based instruction, the program aims to produce graduates who are not only academically proficient but also ethically grounded. This initiative reflects a growing commitment by the Ministry of Education to prioritize social and emotional learning as a means of addressing the multifaceted challenges of the 21st century.
