Japan Hikes Residency Fees 20-Fold Amid Global Reports of Deadly Floods in Nepal and Security Incidents in the US and UAE

Japan has introduced a significant overhaul of its immigration policy, raising permanent residency fees from 10,000 yen to 200,000 yen ($1,270). The twenty-fold increase, spearheaded by Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, comes alongside new requirements for income, pension contributions, and Japanese-language proficiency. This policy shift follows a record 9.5% surge in Japan’s foreign resident population, which has now surpassed 4.12 million. Long queues were reported at immigration offices as applicants rushed to file before the hikes, which are expected to tighten further in April as the government attempts to balance labor needs with societal concerns. Meanwhile, Nepal is facing a humanitarian crisis as the death toll from recent floods and landslides has risen to at least 34. The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority reported that heavy rainfall has left 15 people injured and 11 missing, with landslides accounting for 23 of the fatalities. The disaster has severely impacted approximately 1,200 families, damaging homes and farmland, and forcing the closure of the country’s largest suspension bridge. In a separate tragedy in Canada, two elders from the Tsawwassen First Nation were killed during a community walk for the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation after a vehicle struck pedestrians in British Columbia; police believe the driver suffered a medical emergency rather than intentional harm. Security concerns also dominated international headlines following a workplace shooting in Manassas, Virginia. Three employees of United Rentals are in critical condition after being shot by a colleague, identified as 37-year-old Marvin Grant. While the victims receive treatment for life-threatening injuries, Grant remains at large, prompting an intensive manhunt by local authorities. In the aviation sector, Captain Smit Machchhar, an Indian national flying for Flydubai, was hailed as a hero by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Machchhar was stabbed by another pilot during a flight bound for Israel, necessitating an emergency diversion to Saudi Arabia. Authorities confirmed the pilot saved 174 lives and is currently recovering in Tabuk. In the Middle East, human rights organizations have condemned an Iranian appeals court decision to uphold a sentence of 74 lashes for singer Parastoo Ahmadi. The penalty was issued after Ahmadi performed without a compulsory hijab during a livestreamed concert in late 2024, an act deemed by the court to be "offending public decency." Amnesty International has labeled the punishment "cruel and inhumane," citing it as a further crackdown on artistic expression and women's rights. These developments across Asia, North America, and the Middle East highlight a global landscape marked by significant social policy shifts, environmental challenges, and ongoing concerns regarding regional security.
