GRIDCo and ECG Announce Scheduled Power Outages Across Greater Accra and Ashanti Regions

Residents and businesses in the Greater Accra and Ashanti regions are set to experience scheduled power interruptions beginning Sunday, August 23, 2026, as the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) carry out essential infrastructure repairs and maintenance. The outages, which range in duration from three to 15 hours, are necessary to facilitate the replacement of transmission towers and perform routine maintenance to ensure the long-term reliability of the national grid. Officials from both utility providers have apologized for the anticipated disruptions and requested the patience of the public while technical teams work to stabilize the power system.

The most significant disruption is scheduled for Sunday, August 23, affecting several key areas within the Greater Accra Region. GRIDCo has announced a 15-hour outage from 3:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. to replace a transmission tower on the Volta–Achimota 161kV line that was severely damaged by a tanker explosion. Specifically, emergency replacement work in the Ashaiman section of the line—originally slated for completion on August 16—requires additional efforts on the V19H and V24H lines. Affected communities include James Town, Mamprobi, Nima Township, Madina Township, and Ashaiman. ECG has been tasked with managing the load across both the Accra West and Accra East operational zones to ensure safety during the exercise.

Following the works in the capital, the Electricity Company of Ghana has scheduled a six-hour maintenance outage in the Ashanti Region on Tuesday, August 25, 2026. From 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., power will be disconnected in several enclaves to facilitate planned maintenance aimed at improving local service delivery. Impacted areas include Effiduase, Apemso, Asekyerewa, and the Senkyi enclaves, along with Asenua, parts of Ahwiaa, Overseas, Maase, Simms SHS, and parts of Fawoade. Other communities such as Adumakase Kese, Wawase, and Meduma will also experience the temporary shutdown as technical teams work to enhance the local distribution network.

These maintenance activities represent a coordinated effort by GRIDCo and ECG to address structural damage and prevent long-term system failures. While the extended duration in Greater Accra is a direct response to the damage caused by the tanker accident, the broader maintenance schedule in the Ashanti Region is part of ECG's ongoing commitment to infrastructure upkeep. Authorities advise residents in all affected areas to plan their activities accordingly and take necessary precautions to protect sensitive electronic equipment during the scheduled downtime. Both utility providers have assured the public that power will be restored promptly upon the completion of the technical assignments.
