The Greater Accra Region has established its dominance in Ghanaian para sports by clinching both the men's and women's titles at the 6th Inter-Regional Wheelchair Basketball Championship. Held at the Ho Sports Stadium in the Volta Region, the four-day event brought together athletes from five regions to showcase their skills and advocate for greater inclusion in the sporting arena. The tournament concluded with a powerful display of athleticism, cementing Greater Accra’s position at the top of the podium in both the male and female divisions.
In the men’s division, the Greater Accra team was unstoppable, securing the gold medal after winning every single one of their matches. They were followed by the Ashanti Region, which took the silver medal, while the Central Region rounded out the top three. The women’s category saw a similar outcome, with Greater Accra taking the top spot and the Ashanti Region finishing as runners-up. This comprehensive victory highlights the tactical discipline and growing strength of para-athletic programs within the capital region, setting a high standard for future competitions.
The closing ceremony was further distinguished by a significant philanthropic gesture from Black Stars legend André "Dede" Ayew. The iconic footballer committed GHS 10,000 to support the development of wheelchair basketball and para sports in the Volta Region. Addressing the participants, Ayew encouraged the athletes to take pride in their talents and remain focused on their sporting journeys, stating, "I will always be there for sports people." His pledge was met with great enthusiasm from the audience, reinforcing his ongoing commitment to community engagement and the inspiration of young Ghanaian talent beyond the football pitch.
Beyond the competition, the championship served as a vital platform for advocacy and regional development. Key dignitaries in attendance, including Volta Regional Minister James Gunu and Member of Parliament Eric Edem Agbana, also pledged their support for the growth of wheelchair basketball. Organizers emphasized that such events are crucial for raising awareness and ensuring that persons with disabilities have equal opportunities to participate in competitive athletics. With the successful conclusion of this 6th edition, stakeholders are calling for increased corporate and governmental backing to expand the reach of para sports across all sixteen regions of Ghana.
