The Ghana News Agency (GNA) and the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) have entered into a strategic partnership to significantly enhance public education regarding pensions and retirement planning. This initiative is designed to bridge the information gap and provide accurate data to various demographics, particularly targeting young workers, rural residents, and individuals within the informal sector. By combining GNA’s vast journalistic reach with SSNIT’s institutional expertise, both organizations aim to demystify pension processes and encourage a culture of long-term financial security across the country.
During a recent high-level courtesy visit, GNA’s General Manager, Mr. Albert Kofi Owusu, highlighted the critical role of accurate reporting in shaping public perception of the pension scheme. He emphasized that GNA is prepared to utilize its modernized digital infrastructure and extensive network of journalists to support SSNIT’s membership drive and counter the spread of misinformation. This collaboration is set to involve joint awareness campaigns and specialized training for journalists to ensure that pension-related news is disseminated with clarity and precision, reaching even the most underserved areas of Ghana.
Responding to the initiative, the Director-General of SSNIT, Mr. Kwesi Afreh Biney, expressed his full support for the collaboration, noting its potential impact on national development. He underscored SSNIT’s ongoing efforts to make its services more accessible and transparent, acknowledging that a well-informed public is essential for the success of any social security system. Mr. Biney pledged his institution's commitment to working closely with GNA to provide the necessary resources and information required to educate the public effectively on the benefits of early retirement planning and the security offered by the Trust.
Looking forward, the partnership is expected to gain significant momentum as GNA prepares for its upcoming 70th-anniversary celebrations. Both institutions plan to integrate pension literacy themes into the anniversary activities, creating a platform for sustained dialogue between the Trust and the general public. As Ghana continues to modernize its economic framework, such inter-institutional collaborations are vital for ensuring that all citizens, regardless of their employment status or location, have the knowledge required to navigate their financial future with confidence.
