The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) and various public health advocates are intensifying calls for comprehensive reforms to protect the health and safety of Ghanaians. At the GMA's 26th annual public lecture, President Professor Ernest Yorke demanded a national ban on single-use plastics and styrofoam, citing significant risks to food safety and public health. This advocacy is echoed by nutritionists from the University of Ghana, who are urging the Ministry of Health and the Food and Drugs Authority to implement mandatory Front-of-Pack Nutrition Labels (FOPNL). These labels are intended to simplify complex nutritional information, helping consumers combat rising rates of chronic diseases by making more informed dietary choices.\n\nParallel to these policy demands, local authorities and private stakeholders are taking direct action to improve environmental and community safety. The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has announced a mandatory National Sanitation Day for Saturday, August 1, during which all trading activities must cease between 6:00 a.m. and 12:00 noon to facilitate the clearing of drains and refuse to prevent flooding and disease. Meanwhile, in the Ashanti Region, Asanko Gold Ghana has partnered with the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) to launch the "Ride Responsibly, Arrive Safely" campaign. This initiative targets the Amansie South and West districts, where over 500 reflective vests have been distributed to commercial motorcycle and tricycle riders to enhance visibility and reduce the high incidence of road crashes.\n\nOn a broader scale, the medical community is focusing on long-term cognitive wellness through World Brain Day 2026. Under the theme "Brain Health: Access for All," health professionals are highlighting that up to 45% of dementia cases can be prevented by addressing 14 modifiable risk factors, such as physical inactivity, smoking, and air pollution. By integrating these diverse efforts—from banning hazardous plastics and improving food transparency to enhancing road safety and urban sanitation—stakeholders aim to create a holistic framework for public health. These initiatives underscore a shared responsibility between the government, private sector, and citizens to foster a safer and healthier future for all Ghanaians.
