The Western and Western North Regional branches of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) have officially launched the 2026 Media and Corporate Impact Awards in Takoradi. Under the theme "Reporting Progress, Investing in People," the initiative seeks to celebrate the pivotal role of journalism in fostering accountability and community development. The awards, which are sponsored by Damang Gold Mine, aim to create a dual platform that honors both journalistic excellence and the corporate social responsibility efforts of organizations that are positively impacting the socio-economic landscape of the two regions. The main awards ceremony is scheduled to take place on September 5, 2026.
To ensure a comprehensive evaluation of regional growth, the association has announced that the awards will recognize original journalistic works produced between June 2025 and July 2026. Competitive categories will span several critical sectors, including health, education, environment, agriculture, and infrastructure. During the launch, GJA officials and stakeholders emphasized that these awards are not merely a celebration but a strategic move to encourage investment in the media. By recognizing high-quality reporting, the GJA hopes to highlight the economic opportunities within the regions and stimulate public discourse on development policies.
Speaking at the event, the Western Regional GJA Chairman, Desmond Cudjoe, underscored the urgent need for improved welfare and better working conditions for media practitioners. He argued that investing in the wellbeing of journalists is a prerequisite for a robust democracy and sustainable national development. This sentiment was echoed by the event chair, Nana Nteboa Pra IV, who urged stakeholders to address the various challenges and threats faced by journalists in the line of duty. He further encouraged media professionals to maintain high ethical standards and practice responsible reporting, particularly as they navigate the complexities of the digital age.
As the regions look toward the 2026 ceremony, the GJA expects the initiative to foster a more collaborative relationship between the media and the corporate world. By bridging the gap between reporting and regional investment, the awards aim to inspire a new standard of impactful journalism that directly contributes to the improvement of local communities. The launch concludes with a call to action for all journalists in the Western and Western North regions to focus on developmental stories that will define the progress of the regions over the next three years.
