Ghana Journalists Association Reconstitutes Governance Committees Amidst Institutional Rebuttals from Gold Board and KMA

Chief Justice Baffoe-Bonnie Announces Major Judicial Recruitment Drive as MFWA Unveils Legal Fund for Journalists

In a significant move to strengthen Ghana’s justice system, Chief Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie has announced that the Judiciary is preparing to recruit 127 new magistrates to fill critical vacancies across the country. Speaking at the 45th annual conference of the Association of Magistrates and Judges of Ghana (AMJG), the Chief Justice emphasized that addressing staff shortages is only one part of improving justice delivery. He urged judicial officers to maintain their humanity and strike a healthy balance between their demanding professional duties and their personal lives, stressing that self-care and family time should be viewed as essential components of a supportive Judiciary rather than signs of weakness. This call for institutional support was echoed by the Attorney-General and representatives from the Judicial Service Staff Association, who advocated for improved remuneration and conditions of service to ensure a more resilient legal system. Complementing this push for judicial strength, private legal practitioner Patrick Fafali Azameti has issued a call for integrity within the legal profession. Addressing young lawyers at a recent Bar anniversary, Azameti warned against the allure of wealth over ethical principles, noting that reputations are easily tarnished in the close-knit legal community. He also expressed concern over the potential politicization of constitutional interpretation, urging legal practitioners to remain steadfast in their adherence to legal principles to safeguard Ghana’s democratic integrity. These warnings underscore the importance of personal and professional accountability as the nation’s legal landscape evolves toward greater accountability. Simultaneously, the Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA) has launched a GH"544,000 Legal Support Fund (LSF) to protect another cornerstone of democracy: investigative journalism. As part of the African Media Integrity and Resilience Programme—supported by the European Union and DW Akademie—this fund is designed to assist journalists facing litigation, criminal charges, and harassment stemming from their work. The initiative arrives at a critical time when rising legal pressures and arrests related to false news have sparked fears of self-censorship. By providing both financial aid and training in media law, the LSF aims to empower journalists to pursue public interest stories and hold powerful institutions accountable without the threat of financial ruin. On the global stage, new developments in technology and immigration are reshaping international norms and professional requirements. Samuel Ato Duncan, President-General of the Centre of Awareness Global Peace Mission, is advocating for a paradigm shift from Artificial Intelligence (AI) toward "Real Intelligence" (RI), arguing that human consciousness rooted in love and truth is the fundamental solution to global conflicts. Meanwhile, Japan has significantly tightened its residency policies, increasing permanent residency fees twenty-fold to 200,000 yen ($1,270) under Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi. Together, these domestic reforms and international shifts highlight a broader movement toward institutional accountability, professional integrity, and the careful management of human resources in an increasingly complex world.
