NAIMOS Intensifies 'Operation Water Shield' to Protect River Pra Amid Growing Mining Sector Tensions

The National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) has significantly ramped up its enforcement efforts with the launch of 'Operation Water Shield,' a targeted initiative aimed at safeguarding Ghana’s vital water bodies from the destructive impacts of illegal mining. In a recent series of raids across the Adansi South District in the Ashanti Region, security forces seized 10 excavators and destroyed numerous pumping machines operating along the River Pra. The operation specifically targeted sites in Adiemra and Tweapease, where illegal activities have led to severe environmental degradation, including the siltation of water sources and the unauthorized diversion of the river's natural course. While some miners at the seized sites presented documentation claiming to have valid licenses, NAIMOS officials clarified that these individuals lacked the specific authorizations required for their current locations. The operation resulted in the arrest of several suspects, including one individual claiming ownership of the seized heavy machinery. Local farmers have widely welcomed the intervention, noting that the pollution of the River Pra has long threatened their livelihoods and the ecological health of the region. NAIMOS has reaffirmed its commitment to continuing these sweeps to restore the river to its natural state and deter further illegal encroachments. Parallel to these environmental enforcement actions, the mining sector has faced escalating volatility and security concerns. In Nsuapemso, a security operation involving National Security personnel, the Ghana Armed Forces, and the Police turned violent, resulting in gunfire and injuries to two individuals at the offices of Nawara Mining Company. This incident is linked to a protracted legal dispute over mining concessions between Nawara and CMS & A&A PRO Mining Company. Nawara officials have alleged that their operations have been unlawfully targeted despite court injunctions intended to protect their work, leading to a climate of fear among local residents. These combined developments underscore the complex challenges currently facing Ghana’s mining industry. While the state continues to prioritize the protection of natural resources through initiatives like 'Operation Water Shield,' the violence in Nsuapemso highlights the ongoing tensions regarding land rights and concession management. Traditional leaders, including Queenmother Obaapayin Kyerewaa I, have expressed deep concern over the growing insecurity linked to mining activities, calling for more effective resolution of disputes to ensure the safety of communities and the sustainable management of the nation's mineral wealth.
