Prof. Samuel Nii Odai has issued a clarion call to Ghanaian higher education institutions to urgently integrate Artificial Intelligence (AI) and digital learning into their academic curricula. Speaking at the 11th Congregation of West End University College (WEUC), Prof. Odai highlighted the shifting global technological landscape, emphasizing that for Ghana to remain competitive, its universities must evolve beyond traditional teaching methods. The central goal of this digital transformation is to equip the next generation of graduates with the skills necessary to become creators of technology rather than mere consumers, ensuring they are prepared for an increasingly automated and data-driven workforce.
During his address, Prof. Odai underscored the transformative potential of AI across various sectors of the economy, ranging from healthcare and agriculture to finance. He argued that the current educational model, which often prioritizes rote memorization, is no longer sufficient in an era defined by rapid technological advancement. Instead, he advocated for a curriculum that fosters critical thinking, complex problem-solving, and digital literacy. This shift is essential for the 601 graduates honored at the ceremony—a notable increase from the previous year’s cohort—as they enter a job market that demands high levels of adaptability and innovative technical expertise.
Supporting this vision, the Rector of West End University College, Prof. Ben Oduro, reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to enhancing the quality of education through modern pedagogical models. He noted that the university is actively exploring new frameworks to meet the future demands of industry and global standards. The congregation also served as a platform to highlight the critical role of entrepreneurship, with speakers encouraging graduates to apply their technological training to address local challenges with home-grown solutions. By bridging the gap between academia and digital innovation, Ghanaian universities aim to produce leaders capable of driving the nation’s socio-economic development through the strategic application of AI.
