Commercial Transport Operators Arraigned and Jailed for Violent Crimes Across Ghana

In a series of separate law enforcement actions across Ghana, several commercial transport operators have been arrested or sentenced for violent offenses, including an alleged murder plot and physical assaults on officers. These cases, spanning the Greater Accra, Ashanti, and Eastern regions, highlight a troubling trend of volatility within the transport sector and the swift response of the Ghana Police Service and the judiciary to maintain public order. The incidents involve taxi executives, a tricycle rider, and a motorcycle operator, each facing significant legal consequences for their actions.

In the Madina Municipality, the Divisional Police Command intercepted a chilling conspiracy involving leadership at the Botwe Old Town Taxi Rank. Eric Tettey, a former chairman, and Abubakar Altine, the current chairman, were arrested on September 3, 2026, for allegedly plotting the murder of Esther Danquah, a local resident and susu collector. Acting on intelligence gathered over two weeks, police apprehended the suspects just as they were reportedly preparing to execute their plan. Preliminary investigations suggest the motive was financial; one of the suspects allegedly owed Danquah a significant sum of money and sought to eliminate her to avoid repayment. Both men remain in custody as investigations proceed toward a formal arraignment.

Further east, 32-year-old okada rider Zordzi Kwame appeared before the Odumase Krobo Circuit Court on September 7, 2026, charged with a violent machete attack. Kwame is accused of participating in a mob assault involving approximately 30 individuals at Belekorpe, near Kpong, on August 26, 2026. The incident, which reportedly stemmed from a family land dispute, left a retired police officer and two others with severe injuries. Presided over by His Honour Kwesi Appiatse Abaidoo, the court heard how Kwame allegedly wielded a cutlass during the confrontation. This case underscores the recurring issue of land-related violence and the involvement of local transport operators in communal disputes.

In the Ashanti Region, the Nkawie Circuit Court has handed down a custodial sentence to 24-year-old tricycle (Pragyia) rider Abdul Aziz. Aziz was sentenced to three months in prison after pleading guilty to charges of negligently causing harm during a confrontation with police on September 3, 2026. The altercation began when a Community Police Assistant (CPA) attempted to escort Aziz to a police station because he lacked a valid driver’s license and necessary documentation. Aziz resisted the order and bit the officer on the chest. Though he was eventually apprehended with the help of bystanders, the court's swift sentencing serves as a stern warning against the physical assault of law enforcement officers performing their duties.

These incidents collectively point to the need for increased oversight and regulation within the commercial transport industry. While these operators provide essential services, the recent surge in criminal activities—ranging from financial disputes turning deadly to violent resistance of traffic laws—remains a concern for public safety. As the suspects in the Madina and Odumase Krobo cases await further legal proceedings, the Ghana Police Service continues to urge the public to use legal channels for dispute resolution rather than resorting to violence.
