
Technical universities across Ghana are intensifying efforts to bridge the gap between academic research and industrial application to address the country’s pressing developmental hurdles. Leaders at Takoradi Technical University (TTU) and Kumasi Technical University (KsTU) have called for a paradigm shift where engineering education transcends the classroom to provide tangible solutions for national issues such as unreliable energy supply, flooding, and housing deficits. These initiatives, supported by professional bodies and industry leaders, aim to foster a new generation of engineers equipped with both technical expertise and commercial insight to drive national growth.
At the Takoradi Technical University’s Innovation Summit and Career Fair, Pro Vice-Chancellor Ing. Prof. Ebenezer Boakye emphasized that policy interventions alone are insufficient to resolve Ghana’s structural challenges. He urged students to view their final-year projects as potential commercial ventures that could spearhead industrialization and national development. The summit showcased practical student-led innovations, including a new waste management system and a smart extension board designed to mitigate the effects of power outages. Industry experts, including Ing. Martin Gyan from the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), highlighted the critical role of emerging technologies—such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the Internet of Things (IoT)—in modernizing Ghana’s infrastructure.
Complementing these calls for innovation, Kumasi Technical University (KsTU) is strengthening its ties with the Institution of Engineering and Technology, Ghana (IET-GH) to improve graduate employability. During a strategic visit by an IET-GH delegation to KsTU’s Faculty of Built and Natural Environment (FBNE), discussions centered on aligning academic curricula with professional construction and civil engineering standards. Prof. F. K. Bondinuba and Prof. Humphrey Danso stressed the importance of exposing students to professional ethics and membership pathways early in their academic journey. This partnership aims to ensure that graduates are not only technically proficient but also fully prepared for the professional expectations of the construction sector.
These collective efforts by TTU and KsTU signal a strategic turn toward demand-driven education within Ghana's technical university sector. As these institutions align more closely with industry giants and professional regulators, the focus is shifting from theoretical knowledge to research-driven engineering that directly addresses societal needs. This movement promises to enhance the professional development of students while positioning technical universities as central pillars in Ghana’s drive for sustainable national development and industrial self-reliance.
