The Ghana Police Service has intensified its crackdown on violent crime and illicit drug activities across Northern Ghana, following two major operations that resulted in the dismantling of a lethal robbery gang and the arrest of five suspects in a drug raid. In the Upper East Region, a tactical operation in the Tilly Forest led to a fierce shootout, while in the Northern Region, a targeted raid in Tamale's Aboabo area successfully intercepted a significant supply of narcotics and illegal firearms. These coordinated efforts by regional commands signal a robust response to the recent surge in motorbike thefts and mobile money robberies that have concerned local communities.
The Upper East operation focused on a notorious gang linked to several high-profile crimes, including the murder of a police officer. During the mission in the Tilly Forest, police encountered heavy resistance and engaged the suspects in a gun battle. Three members of the gang were fatally wounded and later died at the hospital, while two police officers sustained injuries during the confrontation. Officers at the scene retrieved multiple weapons and stolen motorbikes. Authorities are currently pursuing the remaining gang members and have appealed to the public and medical facilities to report any individuals presenting with suspicious gunshot wounds.
In a parallel success on September 21, 2026, the Northern Regional Special Operations Team (RED MARIA) conducted a raid in the Tamale Aboabo Scrap Area based on credible intelligence. The operation led to the arrest of five individuals: Ibrahim Issahaku, Mohamed John, Mohamed Nawas, Mohamed Osman Awal, and Kwame Boateng. A thorough search of the premises and the suspects' belongings revealed two foreign-made pistols, 9mm ammunition, and 123 wraps of suspected Indian hemp, alongside quantities of Rohypnol and Tramadol. Significant amounts of cash were also recovered, including GH¢1,880 at Issahaku’s residence and GH¢18,825 found on Boateng’s motorcycle.
These operations represent a significant blow to criminal networks operating within the northern belt of the country. The Northern Regional Command has reiterated its commitment to intelligence-led policing to ensure the safety of residents and the security of commercial activities. As investigations continue, the police have assured the public that they will remain vigilant and proactive in neutralizing threats to national stability. Residents are encouraged to continue collaborating with law enforcement by providing timely information to help maintain the current momentum in the fight against organized crime.
