Ghana Police Launch Manhunt After Gunmen Shoot Community Police Assistant Emmanuel Agyapong in Central Region

The Ghana Police Service has launched an intensive manhunt for a group of unidentified gunmen following the shooting of a 27-year-old Community Police Assistant (CPA) in the Central Region. The victim, identified as Emmanuel Agyapong, was targeted in Dwakessiem, a community situated near Dunkwa-on-Offin, on June 25, 2023. This violent incident has sparked immediate concern among residents and high-ranking security officials, highlighting the increasing risks faced by those serving in community law enforcement roles.

According to official police accounts, the shooting was the result of an altercation that escalated between Agyapong and the occupants of a motorcycle. Following the initial dispute, one of the motorbike riders reportedly left the scene and returned shortly after with a group of armed associates. The confrontation turned violent when the assailants opened fire, hitting Agyapong in the right thigh. The attackers fled the scene immediately after the shooting, leaving the injured officer in need of urgent medical care.

Agyapong was initially rushed to the Dunkwa-on-Offin Municipal Hospital for emergency stabilization. However, due to the severity of the gunshot wound, he was subsequently referred to the Okomfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi for more advanced medical treatment. Police Commander DSP Simon Boavo has confirmed the incident, stating that the regional command is following several leads to ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice for the assault.

In the aftermath of the shooting, the Ghana Police Service has called for greater community vigilance and cooperation. DSP Boavo emphasized that timely public intervention and the sharing of information are critical components in preventing violence against security personnel and ensuring community safety. The police continue to urge anyone with relevant information regarding the identity or whereabouts of the suspects to come forward, reinforcing the need for a strong partnership between law enforcement agencies and the public they protect.
