The Ghana Police Service has intensified its crackdown on violent crime following the arrest of seven suspects in connection with two separate, gruesome murders in the Western and Central Regions. In Agona Nkwanta, five individuals were apprehended for the robbery and killing of a 40-year-old gold buyer, while in Awutu Bereku, two suspects are in custody for the brutal murder and burning of a commercial motorcycle operator. These incidents have sparked renewed concerns over public safety and the protection of local businessmen and transport workers in their respective communities.
In the Western Region, the police identified the five suspects in the Agona Nkwanta case as Christopher Seyiri, Bashiru Ibrahim, Thomas Odoom, Isaac Quayeson, and their alleged leader, Emmanuel Amponsah. The victim, Seth Kobina, was targeted in a robbery in Agona Fie on August 20, 2026, during which he was shot. Despite being rushed to the hospital, Kobina succumbed to his injuries. Investigations led to the swift apprehension of the group; however, authorities reported that the primary suspect, Emmanuel Amponsah, died shortly after his arrest. The remaining four suspects are assisting the police as they seek to identify further connections to the crime and any additional accomplices.
Simultaneously, the Awutu Bereku District Command in the Central Region is processing two suspects linked to a horrific attack near Awutu Kwei. The victim, an Okada rider in his late 30s, was reportedly attacked and killed, after which his body and motorcycle were set ablaze by his assailants. The extreme brutality of the crime has shocked the local community and the commercial transport sector. Police have successfully taken two individuals into custody as they work to determine the specific motives behind the attack and whether other individuals were involved in the conspiracy.
The Ghana Police Service continues to conduct thorough investigations into both cases, emphasizing their commitment to dismantling criminal networks and ensuring that perpetrators of violent acts face the full rigors of the law. As these cases move toward the court system, authorities have urged citizens to remain vigilant and cooperate with law enforcement by providing timely information on suspicious activities. These arrests underscore the ongoing challenges faced by police in securing rural and peri-urban areas against both opportunistic and organized violent crime.
