The National Investment Bank (NIB) has achieved a major financial turnaround, reporting a profit after tax of GH¢343.9 million for the 2025 financial year. This recovery, supported by a 93% government stake, saw the bank's operating income surge by 135% and total equity rise to GH¢1.55 billion. NIB's assets grew to GH¢12.22 billion, while its non-performing loan ratio improved from 76% to 69.7%. This positive momentum is mirrored in the Bank of Ghana’s 2025 Annual Report, which recorded a 26.7% increase in registered security interests, totaling 484,059 registrations. Secured lending reached GH¢148.3 billion, a massive jump from GH¢60.9 billion the previous year, with the commerce and finance sectors accounting for nearly 89% of all secured transactions. In contrast to these gains, the ARB Apex Bank PLC has issued a stern warning to community banks regarding capital adequacy. Acting Managing Director Curtis William Brantuo emphasized that community banks must meet the Bank of Ghana’s minimum paid-up capital requirement of five million Cedis by December 31 or face severe sanctions, including license revocation. To remain compliant, under-capitalized institutions are being urged to mobilize fresh capital, consider mergers, or voluntarily surrender their licenses. This regulatory push aims to ensure the long-term resilience of the rural and community banking sector, which has shown significant growth despite recent economic headwinds. Simultaneously, the Ghana Association of Banks (GAB) has intensified its public safety efforts through the #ShineYourEye Anti-Fraud Campaign. Recently launching its first regional roadshow in Tamale, the GAB engaged residents through a three-hour float and direct education on identifying social engineering scams, identity theft, and phishing. Spokesperson Collins Boamah reiterated that banks will never request sensitive information like PINs or OTPs, framing fraud prevention as a shared responsibility. The campaign is set to move to Kumasi in July 2026. Complementing this focus on professional standards, Ecobank Ghana has launched its Rising Leaders Initiative, a six-month program designed to provide structured leadership training and employment pathways for Ghanaian youth. The broader economic environment reflects a period of relative stability, with the Ghanaian Cedi maintaining its ground against major currencies. As of July 3, 2026, the interbank exchange rate stood at GHS11.40 to the US dollar, with forex bureau selling rates at GHS12.25. These collective developments—from NIB’s profitability and BoG's collateral growth to intensified fraud education and currency stability—point toward a maturing financial ecosystem focused on transparency, digital transformation, and consumer confidence. As the sector navigates upcoming capital deadlines and technological shifts, the focus remains on building a secure and inclusive financial landscape for all Ghanaians.
