Ghana Mobilizes for Nationwide Cleanup Exercise on July 10-11 to Address Flood Recovery and Sanitation

Ministry of Local Government Mobilizes for National Sanitation Day as Ghana Intensifies Environmental Action

Ghana is set to observe National Sanitation Day on Saturday, October 3, 2026, a date that coincides with the global commemoration of World Cleanup Day 2026. The Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs has announced that the flagship national exercise will commence at 7:00 a.m. at Rawlings Park in Accra, in collaboration with the Accra Metropolitan Assembly. This year’s global theme, "From Clean Plates to Clean Cities," focuses on the reduction of food waste, while Ghana’s national theme, "National Sanitation Day: Local Actions Yielding National Impact," emphasizes the power of community-led efforts in achieving a cleaner country. To ensure nationwide impact, the Ministry has urged all 261 Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) to mobilize their respective communities, including traditional leaders, businesses, and civil society organizations. Residents across the country are encouraged to clean their immediate surroundings and adopt responsible waste management practices that extend beyond the designated cleanup day. The initiative aims to foster a culture of ongoing environmental responsibility, moving away from periodic efforts toward sustainable daily habits that protect public health. This national mobilization follows recent targeted environmental actions across the capital, including a major beach cleanup in Chorkor led by the Africa Centre for Nature-Based Climate Action (AC4NCA). Supported by partners such as the Jospong Group and the Pulitzer Center, volunteers at Chorkor worked to mitigate marine and coastal pollution while engaging local residents in discussions about marine conservation. Juliet Osei-Wusu, acting Executive Secretary of AC4NCA, noted that such community-based initiatives are critical for implementing nature-based solutions to climate change and pollution at the local level. Complementing these sanitation efforts, the 14th Ghana Garden and Flower Show recently concluded at the Efua Sutherland Children’s Park, where stakeholders called for the recognition of horticulture and floriculture as significant economic engines. Organized by Stratcomm Africa from September 11 to 21, the event highlighted the potential of green spaces to drive business growth and sustainable urban development. Keynote speakers emphasized that protecting urban gardens and fostering collaboration between the government and the private sector is essential for strengthening Ghana's green economy. Together, these events signal a growing national movement toward environmental stewardship that combines sanitation, conservation, and economic development. As the Ministry of Local Government prepares for the October 3 exercise, officials are reminding the public that creating healthier communities requires a collective shift in mindset. By aligning local actions with national and global standards, Ghana aims to set a benchmark for environmental excellence in the region, ensuring that the impact of National Sanitation Day resonates throughout the year.
