Dr. Adam Bonaa, the Executive Secretary of the National Commission on Small Arms and Light Weapons (NACSA), has called on Ghanaians to surrender unlicensed firearms at police stations as part of the newly launched Gun Amnesty Programme. This initiative, which started on December 1, 2025, allows individuals to surrender or register illegal firearms without the fear of arrest or interrogation until January 15, 2026. Dr. Bonaa emphasized the critical role of community leaders, including religious figures, in promoting this program aimed at enhancing national peace and security. He warned that the proliferation of illegal firearms poses a significant threat to stability, drawing comparisons to similar situations in other regions. Currently, the Greater Accra Region is leading in the number of firearms surrendered under this initiative, reflecting a positive response from the community. The NACSA is hopeful that this program will significantly reduce the number of illegal weapons in circulation and contribute to a safer Ghana.
