Ghana's Energy Sector Surges as BOST Energies Pays Historic Dividend and Shell-Chevron Join Oil Exploration Drive

Ghana’s energy landscape is experiencing a significant transformation, highlighted by record-breaking financial performance from state-owned BOST Energies and a major new exploration agreement with global oil majors Shell and Chevron. Energy and Green Transition Minister Dr. John Abdulai Jinapor recently announced these milestones, emphasizing the government’s commitment to maximizing the country’s hydrocarbon potential and ensuring energy security under the administration of President John Mahama. These developments represent a dual-track strategy to revitalize both the upstream exploration and downstream distribution sectors to drive national economic growth.

In a major boost for the upstream sector, the Government of Ghana, alongside the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) and GNPC Explorco, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Shell Overseas Holdings and Chevron Sub-Saharan Africa Ventures during Africa Oil Week 2026. This strategic partnership focuses on the South Deepwater Tano Cape Three Points Block, an area estimated to hold over 3 billion barrels of hydrocarbon potential. Minister Jinapor described the agreement as a clear signal of "renewed investor interest" in Ghana, asserting that the government is actively enhancing the investment climate to attract further international collaborations that create lasting value.

Parallel to these exploration efforts, BOST Energies Limited reported a landmark financial recovery for the 2025 fiscal year. At its 2026 Annual General Meeting in Accra, the company announced its first-ever dividend payment to the Government of Ghana in its 32-year history. The dividend, representing 5% of net profit and totaling GH₵34.2 million, follows substantial increases in revenue, profitability, and shareholder equity. Managing Director Mr. Afetsi Awoonor attributed this milestone to a rigorous focus on operational efficiency, financial discipline, and resilience, marking a pivot from the company's previous years of financial struggle.

The Minister of Energy praised BOST Energies for its performance, encouraging the board and management to maintain their focus on shareholder value and operational excellence. As the government continues to leverage the success of the Shell-Chevron deal to attract more upstream investment, these combined successes in state-enterprise management and resource exploration are expected to strengthen Ghana’s energy security. Moving forward, the government remains committed to using these partnerships to provide a substantial and sustainable boost to the national economy.
