Six hundred and fifteen personnel of the Ghana Battalion 92 (GHANBATT 92) have successfully returned to Accra, marking the completion of their demanding peacekeeping mission in Southern Lebanon. Serving under the banner of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), the contingent operated in one of the most volatile regions in the world, characterized by an escalation in conflict between Israeli forces and Hezbollah. Their arrival in the capital follows months of rigorous service where the battalion was required to navigate a complex security landscape while upholding the mandate of international peace and security.
The performance of GHANBATT 92 has been described as exemplary by military leadership. Beyond their primary peacekeeping duties, the personnel undertook significant humanitarian work and critical infrastructure repairs, which were essential for the survival and wellbeing of local Lebanese populations. Major General Gbetanu, who welcomed the troops, expressed profound pride in their accomplishments, noting that their resilience and professionalism under fire have brought great honor to the Ghana Armed Forces. He highlighted that the battalion's ability to remain focused on their mission despite the constant threat of exchange of fire is a testament to their superior training and discipline.
To address the aftermath of such a high-stakes deployment, the military hierarchy has pledged full support for the returning personnel. Major General Gbetanu assured the troops of comprehensive reintegration programs and confirmed that compensation would be provided for those who sustained injuries or were otherwise adversely affected by the hostilities. To aid in their transition back to civilian life and ensure proper recuperation, all 615 soldiers have been granted a special 42-day leave. This period of rest is intended to allow the peacekeepers to reconnect with their families and recover from the stresses of the mission before they are reassigned to their various units across the country.
