George Opare Addo calls for alignment of education with labour market needs

The Minister for Youth Development and Empowerment, George Opare Addo, has voiced concerns over the effectiveness of Ghana’s current human capital development strategy. Speaking on the country’s industrial landscape, the Minister observed a significant disconnect where industries are struggling with acute skill shortages while university graduates remain largely unemployed. He argued that the current educational output does not sufficiently meet the practical demands of the modern economy, necessitating an urgent rethink of how the nation prepares its youth for the workforce. To address this imbalance, Opare Addo called for the establishment of a coordinated national framework designed to align vocational training and higher education directly with the actual needs of the labour market. He emphasized that such a framework is essential for boosting industrialization and ensuring that the energy and potential of Ghana's young population are fully utilized. The Minister's remarks highlight a push toward more targeted skills training and the creation of structured job opportunities that reflect the specific requirements of private sector employers. The discourse was supported by insights from other industry and policy leaders. Constance Swaniker, representing the Design and Technology Institute, underscored the shift in global economic trends, stating that long-term national prosperity will depend more on human capabilities than on traditional natural resources in the coming years. Similarly, Dr. Audrey Smock Amoah of the National Development Planning Commission (NDPC) advocated for the creation of diverse employment pathways that go beyond traditional academic routes. She stressed the importance of enhancing job readiness and productivity among the youth through varied vocational and technical training models. Looking forward, the Minister and stakeholders suggested that Ghana’s development goals are contingent on a strategic shift in education policy. By prioritizing practical skill sets and fostering collaboration between educational institutions and industrial players, the government aims to bridge the unemployment gap. This approach is expected to not only reduce the number of jobless graduates but also provide the necessary technical expertise required to sustain and expand Ghana's industrial sectors.
