Ghana is solidifying its position on the global sports stage through a series of strategic preparations and qualifications for major upcoming international competitions. Ghana Athletics has officially named a formidable five-man squad to represent the nation at the World Athletics Relays in Gaborone. The team, headlined by elite sprinters Benjamin Azamati, Joseph Paul Amoah, and Abdul-Rasheed Saminu, also includes Isaac Botsio and Ibrahim Fuseini. This event serves as a critical qualifier for both the 2027 World Championships and the 2026 World Ultimate Championships, as the team looks to build on their record-breaking performance at the previous World Championships.
Simultaneously, the National Paralympic Committee (NPC) of Ghana has secured significant milestones with three para-athletes qualifying for the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Hayford Addai secured his spot in the Men’s 100m T47 with a time of 11.09 seconds, while Zinabu Issah qualified in the Women’s Shot Put F57. Bostyo Nkegbe also earned a qualification through a bipartite slot, bringing Ghana’s total Para sport representation for the Glasgow Games to five slots. The NPC is currently seeking stakeholder support to enhance training opportunities and participation in international tournaments leading up to the event.
In the realm of youth sports development, Chef de Mission Evans Yeboah has finalized a strategic roadmap for Ghana’s participation in the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games, the first of its kind on the African continent. Following a high-level seminar in Senegal, Yeboah collaborated with the Ghana High Commission to establish operational guidelines focused on athlete welfare and logistics for the event, scheduled for October 31 to November 13, 2026. Senegal’s readiness was confirmed through inspections of the modern Athletes’ Village and upgraded competition venues, which will host over 3,000 athletes from 206 nations across 25 sports disciplines.
Furthering the focus on youth talent, a specialized Under-17 scouting session was scheduled at the University of Ghana on April 23, 2026. Organized by the Junior Football Camp (JFC) in partnership with the Wolves Football Academy and Lucton School, the event aimed to bridge the gap between technical skill and academic opportunity. Selected players may earn scholarships in the UK and undergo training experiences in Europe. These multi-disciplinary efforts across athletics, para-sports, and football underscore a comprehensive national strategy to nurture Ghanaian talent and achieve excellence on the world stage.
