Ghana’s sports landscape is witnessing a surge in corporate support and institutional development, headlined by a new partnership between Ghana Athletics and Peeva Beverages. Peeva Beverages, a subsidiary of Feenam Industries, has been named the exclusive beverage sponsor for the 24th CAA Senior Athletics Championships. The agreement, formalized in Accra by Ghana Athletics President Bawah Fuseini and CEO Lady Lesley Adjei Mensah, ensures total product availability during the event scheduled for May 12 to 17 at the University of Ghana Stadium. This collaboration is viewed as a major milestone, with both parties expressing hope for a long-term relationship that extends well beyond the upcoming championships.
In a historic achievement for inclusive sports, para-athlete Tahiru Haruna has officially qualified for the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Competing in the Para Powerlifting Over 72kg category, Haruna becomes the fourth Ghanaian para-athlete to secure a spot for the games, following his strong performance at the Paris 2024 Paralympics. This success is the result of a coordinated effort between the Ghana Olympic Committee and the National Paralympic Committee Ghana. Complementing this athletic success, the Ghana Sports Fund has reaffirmed its commitment to technical growth. Administrator Dr. David Kofi Mawuvi Wuaku recently announced that the Fund is aligning its policies to increase support for coach training and technical education, highlighting a new generation of coaches that includes a significant number of women and former national players.
The football sector is also experiencing significant activity at both the grassroots and professional levels. The second edition of the Agazy International Tournament recently concluded in Tema, attracting over 15 international scouts from Europe who monitored talents from across West Africa. Similarly, the Youth Opportunity Partnership Program (YOPP) hosted its General Sports Festival in the Northern Region, where the Kasuliyili girls' football team triumphed in a penalty shootout. These developmental milestones, however, stand in contrast to recent disciplinary issues. The Ghana Football Association’s Disciplinary Committee has slapped Asante Kotoko goalkeeper Mohamed Camara with a five-match suspension and a GH¢20,000 fine following an assault on a referee during a match against Karela United.
Beyond the field and the boardroom, the sports community is also grappling with personal narratives involving former stars. Felicia, the sister of former national player Edwin Gyimah, recently made a public plea for assistance in securing housing for herself and her husband following a series of family property disputes. This range of stories—from multi-million cedi sponsorships and international qualifications to grassroots empowerment and professional discipline—reflects a Ghanaian sports ecosystem that is rapidly evolving. As the Ghana Sports Fund begins a nationwide tour to assess facilities, the focus remains on building a sustainable and professional environment for the next generation of athletes.
