GHAMRO names 16 radio and TV stations paying music royalties

The Ghana Music Rights Organisation (GHAMRO) has publicly recognized 16 radio and television stations for consistently fulfilling their music royalty payment obligations. This announcement, shared via social media, highlights a significant compliance gap within the broadcasting industry, as these 16 entities represent only a small fraction of the more than 700 broadcasters currently operating across the country.

Among the stations praised for their adherence to licensing requirements are major broadcasters such as Joy FM, Hitz FM, and Citi FM. GHAMRO’s decision to name these compliant stations is part of a broader effort to ensure proper compensation for musicians and rights holders. By spotlighting these organizations, the collective management organization aims to set a standard for industry practice and encourage better adherence to national copyright laws.

The organization continues to face substantial hurdles in royalty collection, citing the high number of non-compliant stations as a major barrier to supporting Ghanaian musicians. GHAMRO emphasized that regular payments from broadcasters are essential for the financial sustainability of creative professionals. The initiative serves as a call to action for the hundreds of other broadcasters to regularize their status and contribute to the growth of Ghana’s music sector through legal compliance.
