The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has formally recommended the retention of Carlos Queiroz as the head coach of the Black Stars on a long-term basis. Following a thorough evaluation of his performance during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the GFA Executive Council expressed full backing for the veteran manager to lead the national team into the next cycle. However, despite the association's endorsement, the final decision remains contingent on approval and financial backing from the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, as the coach’s previous short-term agreement has expired.
Negotiations between the GFA and Queiroz have reached a significant impasse due to conflicting financial expectations. Reports indicate that Queiroz is seeking a substantial salary increase, demanding $150,000 per month. This figure is nearly double his previous monthly remuneration of approximately $80,000. Both the GFA and the Ministry of Sports have reportedly rejected these terms, leading to a period of uncertainty regarding the technical leadership of the senior national team. GFA Communications Director Henry Asante Twum confirmed that while the association is keen on stability, the fiscal reality of the requested contract remains a major hurdle.
In the event that a compromise cannot be reached, the GFA has already begun considering internal alternatives to ensure the team’s preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers are not disrupted. Desmond Ofei, who currently serves as an assistant coach, has emerged as the primary candidate to take over the head coaching duties if Queiroz departs. Ofei is highly regarded within the association and is seen as a viable successor capable of maintaining the tactical continuity established during the recent World Cup campaign.
The resolution of this contract saga is expected to be a priority for the government as the Black Stars prepare for their next competitive fixtures. With the 2027 AFCON qualifiers scheduled to begin in September, the Ministry and the GFA must weigh the benefits of Queiroz’s experience against the budgetary constraints of the national sports fund. The outcome will not only determine the direction of the Black Stars but will also test the collaborative relationship between the football governing body and the Ministry under the current administration.
