In a tragic incident off the northwest coast of Gambia, seven bodies have been recovered and 96 individuals rescued after a boat carrying over 200 migrants capsized. The event occurred around midnight in the North Bank region, with ongoing search and recovery efforts supported by naval vessels and local volunteers. Among the rescued, ten migrants are reported to be in critical condition.
This incident highlights the perilous journey many undertake in search of better opportunities, as over 46,000 irregular migrants reached the Canary Islands in 2024 alone, with more than 10,000 losing their lives during the treacherous journey. Despite the alarming figures from 2024, irregular migration along this route has seen a significant decrease of 60% in the first 11 months of 2025, attributed to enhanced prevention measures. The situation underscores the ongoing challenges and dangers faced by migrants in the region.
