The Ghana Association of Banks (GAB) has officially launched the first regional roadshow of its #ShineYourEye anti-fraud campaign in Tamale, marking a significant escalation in its nationwide effort to combat financial crime. The initiative, which is designed to run for five months, aims to equip the public with essential knowledge to identify, prevent, and report fraudulent activities within the banking sector. By engaging directly with residents in the Northern Region, GAB seeks to build a more resilient financial environment and restore consumer confidence in both digital and traditional banking services.
The launch featured a high-energy, three-hour float through major commercial hubs and communities in Tamale, including the bustling Tamale Central Market. Representatives from 16 GAB member banks joined local officials and security services to interact with the public, distributing educational materials and discussing common scams. The campaign specifically targets prevalent threats such as social engineering, identity theft, and phishing—tactics where fraudsters manipulate individuals into revealing sensitive information or transferring funds under false pretenses.
Speaking on behalf of GAB, Collins Boamah emphasized that public awareness is the most critical tool in the fight against increasingly sophisticated financial crimes. He reiterated a fundamental safety rule that remains the cornerstone of the campaign: legitimate banks will never ask customers to provide sensitive credentials like Personal Identification Numbers (PINs) or One-Time Passwords (OTPs) via phone calls, emails, or text messages. Boamah stressed that while banks are continuously strengthening their internal security protocols, fraud prevention remains a shared responsibility between financial institutions and their clients.
The successful execution of the Tamale roadshow sets the stage for a series of regional engagements planned across the country. Following this outreach in the Northern Region, the association intends to maintain its momentum with its next major campaign event scheduled for Kumasi on July 25, 2026. As the #ShineYourEye campaign moves forward, GAB remains committed to bridging the information gap, ensuring that Ghanaians in every region are better prepared to protect their financial assets from deceptive criminal networks.
