Fatal Accident at Dompoase Claims Two Lives and Injures Eight on Cape Coast-Takoradi Highway

A tragic road accident on the Cape Coast-Takoradi Highway has claimed the lives of two individuals and left eight others injured on Friday evening. The incident occurred at Dompoase, near Komenda, when a commercial passenger vehicle was involved in a violent collision. Emergency services were quickly dispatched to the scene, but the severity of the impact resulted in immediate fatalities and several critical injuries among the passengers, highlighting the ongoing safety concerns on this major transit route.

Preliminary reports indicate that the accident involved a Toyota Hiace commercial vehicle traveling along the busy coastal stretch. In an attempt to avoid a head-on collision with an oncoming vehicle that was overtaking in its lane, the driver of the Hiace swerved sharply off the road. This desperate maneuver led the vehicle to crash directly into a stationary truck parked on the shoulder of the highway. The force of the impact caused extensive damage to the commercial vehicle, pinning several passengers inside the mangled wreckage.

Personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) arrived at the scene to conduct difficult extrication and rescue operations. According to fire officials, one victim was pronounced dead at the site of the crash, while another succumbed to their injuries shortly after being freed from the vehicle. The eight survivors, including three who are reported to be in critical condition, were rushed to the Elmina Polyclinic, where they are currently receiving emergency medical treatment for various degrees of trauma.

The incident has once again brought the issue of road safety into sharp focus, particularly regarding dangerous overtaking maneuvers and the hazards posed by stationary vehicles on highway shoulders. The Ghana National Fire Service has emphasized the urgent need for motorists to exercise greater caution and for stricter adherence to road safety regulations to prevent such avoidable tragedies. Local authorities are expected to investigate the circumstances surrounding the presence of the stationary truck as part of broader efforts to improve safety for commuters on the Cape Coast-Takoradi corridor.
