The European Union (EU) has officially awarded 446 Ghanaians scholarships under the Erasmus+ Programme for the 2026 academic year, marking a significant milestone in the educational partnership between Ghana and Europe. During a pre-departure orientation held in Accra on July 24, 2026, the EU Ambassador to Ghana, H.E. Rune Skinnebach, celebrated the achievement of the selected scholars, noting that their participation is part of a broader €26.2 billion global investment by the EU aimed at enhancing skills development, youth mobility, and international cooperation between 2021 and 2027.
The 2026 cohort includes 28 students selected for the prestigious Erasmus Mundus Joint Master’s programme, 14 of whom received full funding, while the remaining 418 beneficiaries were selected under the International Credit Mobility programme for short-term academic exchanges and training. Ambassador Skinnebach urged the recipients to view their studies not just as a personal academic achievement, but as a strategic opportunity to gain the skills and networks necessary to transform Ghana upon their return. Since 2014, more than 3,618 Ghanaian students have benefited from the Erasmus+ initiative, establishing a robust legacy of intellectual and cultural exchange.
Key speakers at the orientation, including GIZ Ghana Country Director Sandra Retzer and Erasmus+ Goodwill Ambassador Nana Aba Anamoah, emphasized the importance of integrity and cultural diplomacy. They encouraged the scholars to act as bridges between Africa and Europe, promoting innovation and collaboration while representing Ghanaian values abroad. Derrick Kyei, a scholarship recipient, expressed gratitude for the opportunity, highlighting how the program is expected to have a transformative impact on his career in sports and contribute to the professionalization of the industry in Africa.
To ensure sustained impact, the EU announced the establishment of "Study in Europe" information desks across 30 Ghanaian universities to guide prospective applicants and strengthen the Erasmus alumni network. By fostering a community of globally-minded graduates equipped with critical thinking and leadership skills, the programme aims to address complex development challenges through evidence-based solutions. This initiative reaffirms the EU's commitment to education as a cornerstone of Ghana's human capital development and a vital tool for strengthening long-term ties between the two continents.
